I am sorry, but I must disagree. There are witches, and there is witchcraft.
So is it evil, or not?

Witchcraft does exist in today's world, believe me. Have you ever heard of the Wicca cult? It is also known as neo-Paganism, and involves people that worship earthly elements and the like. They believe that they can cast spells on people and are actually known as witches themselves.
There are many, many stories of people coming from occultic practices and Satanic cults, with the same kinds of witchcraft and evil that is represented in the Harry Potter books. For example, there was a witch doctor over in Africa who practiced real-life sorcery. He, by his own words, had contact with evil spirits and went and did the deeds that they bade him to do- murder people, etc. Whenever he did these things, the man said that he, through the power of the demons that he was in communication with, was able to literally take the shape of various animals- lions, cheetahs, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but does not Harry Potter's father appear to his son in an animal form in one of the books? See the correlation?
There are many instances of this type of behavior in the world. Quite frankly, if you do not believe that there are evil forces at work, that manifest themselves in practices that the mainstream public regards as "fantasy," then you yourself are living in your own "fantasy," where you deny the truth only to believe what you want. I would hope that you would reconsider your opinions, maatshalz.

Me too....I'm not going to go on riots about it or NEthing, like Joel says, but I am very firmly against it. Yes, witchcraft is real. I know some who have professed to be witches themselves (and they are not my friends!). and I'm not sure all kids know its not real, at least not little kids.

I agree with you Geberia, it very much says in the Bible that witchcraft is horrible. The only reason I like LOTR and the Chronicles of Narnia so much is cause it clearly protrays stories from the Bible. Hello in Lord of the rings section you like it and yet (lord of the rings) has sorcery in it!!!!!!!!!!!! So to cover up my typo of saying witchcraft isn't real here is my rebuttal! Also how does LOTR potray stories of the bible?

Well, we've been talking over this in LOTR thread...however, Harry Potter dosn't really fall into the same category as LOTR or Narnia, in my mind.

yeah LOTR and Narnia aren't exactly witchcraft....i mean the only witch in Narnia is in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe........

And other than waving around a wand and having evil looking friends she dosn't do witchcraft.

Well, since everyone left me in the Christianity Catholicism debate, and since I'm not creative enough to start my own thread, I figured I'd re-awake this one (and make it a little less one-sided).
First off, I'm going to say I respect you a lot more for not reading the Harry Potter books, than reading them without a second thought. But, frankly, you can read them, and here's why.
First off, yes, witchcraft and necromancy is condemned in the bible. But, is Harry Potter witchcraft? If it is, than you have to ban: Sleeping Beauty Snow White Jack and the Beanstalk etc etc. Chronicles of Narnia LOTR
on and on. If you think the above books are OK, but Harry Potter isn't, than your just singling out Harry Potter. For me, there's a difference between waving a wand and turning a mouse into a matchbox, and calling up evil spirits from the dead, but they don't do that in Harry Potter. Harry Potter magic is all stuff you'd find in fairy tales, nothing more.

There is something more in Harry Potter though. The author is a Wicca for goodness sakes!!!!!! Do u not think that the author is trying to put her ideas out to kids through her book? I understand what your saying about the fairy tales, but those are more of teaching about morals. Harry Potter, from what i've heard, teaches you how to be a witch.......that doesn't sound right to me.

In fact, I have always thought that many cartoons and supposedly innocent movies convey a good deal of evil- ie. Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, The Wizard of Oz, etc. Anything with magical undetones to it is bad, IMHO, and is on the same level as Harry Potter. I have seen some of the above movies/shows, and I will never have anything to do with them again. I guess I'm with you on this one, heartofgold.

The arguement that she is a wicca, I do not see any evidence for. please find me an article where it says that.

Oh, what I meant was, if you don't find Fairy Tales offensive (which, not to make you look weird Armany, but most people don't), you won't find this offensive. By the way, I would relax you standards for Chronicles of Narnia, as the whole thing is a Christian Allegory.
No, J.K. Rowling is not part of a cult. All you have to do is read her books to see that. I've never heard of a cult where everyone gets together and says, "lets turn mice into matchboxes using a magic wand!!!!" No, they're going to call on evil spirits, thats was a cult is.

I can't find it at this moment, but I've read an article with her claiming to be one. My youth group was having a debate and found it so she definitely is since she claimed it herself, but u'll have to go with my word until i can find it again.

I've also heard that in an interview she didn't believe in the magic she so prolifically wrote about.

oh well, I still cannot find it, but u must see that the fact that this book has been related and argued with the Wiccan belief is enough to show how much this book deals with witchcraft! When you google Harry Potter you receive about half of them articles showing how it shows Wiccan belief, and half that show how Christians are arguing about it.
Then say you google Chronicles of Narnia, almost every single one is about Christians trying to learn from the book and trying to see the message C.S. Lewis is trying to tell others about God....................
see what i'm saying?
