Hey, guys,
I'm now a big fan of Johnny Cash! I really do enjoy classic country from the 50s-60s-70s... I don't have much of a stomach for current country, but Johnny Cash really was an awesome artist, and was a great Christian (after he got saved.) It's funny to listen to his songs progress...his pre-Christian songs have the occasional cussword (like in the song: "Boy Named Sue" he says the B word) but his post-salvation era songs talk about Jesus and stuff.
Am I alone in liking the Man in Black?

My dad likes him, but I don't. He only has the christian songs of Cash, though, so I've never heard his country. Since he became a Christian later in his career, his voice for the gospel songs is kinda....weak, I guess is a good way to put it :\

I absolutely hate old country music, like Merle Haggard and Hank Williams. It's so depressing to me. They just sing about drinking and chasing women, much like a lot of today's country music does. I just don't like the old stuff in country.
Johnny Cash is OK. I'm definitely not a fan, though.

Right now I am listening to Avenged Sevenfold, and it's GOOD!
(raise your head and taste the courage, Fall from grace, unholy night...)
I know, violent, I know, a little on the hard rock side, but it's really quite good!

I can't STAND the new crap (with the exception of, like, Randy Travis.) Old country and bluegrass...love 'em...I really like folk music. My dad's family always grew up on that stuff....its' in my blood. I like Hank Williams OK...I like John Denver as well.

Old Country seems too soft and slow for me ( I am a hard rock and rap person) The new country I don't like either because they just talk about their trucks, dogs, and girlfriends in my opinion.

it seems like all old and new country songs are all about, girls, breakups, BBQ, cowboys, beat up trucks, and beer.

My dad's family always grew up on that stuff....its' in my blood. I like Hank Williams OK...I like John Denver as well. Yep. I am dead-set against old country. I used to like modern country, but I've pretty much shyed away from it in the last few years/months. The only modern country that I like is music from the likes of Rascal Flatts. They've got a pop-ish sound to them, don't sing about drinking, etc. (they do sing about love a lot, but nothing inappropriate). They're pretty up-beat, too. Keith Urban is all right, too, but that's about as far as it goes. I don't like Randy Travis, either. ;D Sorry! I just despise that type of slow country music. It's too reminiscent of older country music: really slow and twangy. The old country stuff is just depressing to me. In the past, I only listened to country. I still listen to it every once in a while, but not that much. The lyrics just turned me away recently. For example, Toby Keith's latest hit song is entitled, "Get Drunk And Be Somebody." Doesn't that say anything as to the spirituality of the genre in general?

A country singer you should check out is Michael James. I don't know if he's around these days, but all he sings about is God, Jesus, and whatnot...

As Steelsheen knows, my parents are weird about music, and so am I. My parents are weird in that they are really really strict, and there is stuff that is okay with my dad that my mom thinks is bad. So, I like a mix. I like bluegrass (Nickel Creek, Alison Kraus), and a little country (Rascal Flatts and selected songs from Alan Jackson), and some CCM (Soverign Grace aka PDI, and Darby Hughes).
Yup, I'm weird. Techno, when done properly, can be cool as well. *goes off singing "I'm Blue"...*

Classical: Hilary Hahn, Joshua Bell, Yo Yo Ma, Patricia McCarty, Kim Kashkashian, Itzhak Perlman, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor, Fritz Kreisler, London Symphony Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and many many more...
Tiny Bit of Country: Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Mindy Smith, & Mutual Admiration Society
Other: Norah Jones.
If you were to ask me my absolute favorite musicians, the three that would most readily come to mind are Alison Krauss, Johnny Cash, and Nickel Creek.
Admittedly, I am not a big fan of today's Christian music. I especially do not appreciate Christian rock...and most of the Christian contemporary music that I hear isn't much better to my ears. A lot of Christians in music are so focused on looking Christian, that they just paste a bunch of Christian lyrics onto a secular music style with no regard to technical excellence. I believe God is glorified when Christians are both technically excellent and use clean lyrics - and I really long for artists who know how to do both! I do like people who might be considered "old" and have a very folkish music style, such as Fernando Ortega & Michael Card. Ah well. Blame it on my upbringing. My mother was a music ed major who's now violinist with perfect pitch, and I guess I listen to music a little differently than others. >_>
