What is your opinion on Gun Control?

Not worth it. Making a law is not going to keep criminals from getting guns. And its still going to be easy to get guns through a black market.
Oh, and there's the bumper sticker, "If guns are banned, can we carry swords?" heh, heh.

I agree with heartofgold. In England, almost no one is allowed to carry a gun (The government says "we'll do the protecting"). That law was instated a few years ago, and now Britian has higher gun crime rates than it did before the law. It's living proof of Gun-Control uselessness.

Shocking!! Another good story. Some guy whose name I can't remember was running around Oklahoma and Arkansas killing people. Not good. Massive manhunt going on, and nobody can find this guy. Still not good. He ends up carjacking a couple from Arkansas, but since they were from Arkansas, they had a gun . They shoot this guy, and now he's sitting in prison. Good. With gun control this couple ends up dead and this guy still on the loose.

I agree with both Heartofgold and Falklands here, and I think that this sentiment will be pretty unanimous here. Gun control is just the government trying to step in and deny another personal right. As you two have said, gun control does more harm than good.
I believe that one of the core issues behind this individual topic is the invasion of privacy and the invasion of the rights of the people by the government. They say they're out to protect us, but then slowly make us ever the more dependent upon governmental institutions and hand-outs. This is something that many conspiracy theorists think will lead to an increasingly opressive government and, for those whose sympathies lie within the evangelical Christian camp, to a global government.
What do you guys think about the government's seemingly heavy meddling with the rights and liberties of citizens?

I think that a certain amount of control may be excercised as it pertains to the moral standards everyone should uphold. Of course, there are problems with that (not everyone's perfect, you know ;D). People can abuse this, leading to a quasi-theocracy (not a real theocracy; in reality God should be the government ). However, the government should uphold principles that work towards people's own good instead of withholding those principles without which the State would degenerate into liberalism. Yet other rights the government should not restrict, such as the right to defend oneself (read this thread's subject), the right to privacy (note that does NOT include a woman's "right" to kill a human being inside her womb), and so on. England (and a lot of Europe), I am sad to say, is an example of the opposite. It is increasingly becoming more liberal in it's treatment of ethics, lavishly bestowing the right to do whatever one wants so long as they don't hurt anyone, and taking away the right to oppose that. However, it is the country with the most surveillance in the world, building databases and increasingly intrusive ways to get information about everyone. The government is seeking to restrict people's rights to defend themselves, saying that they can do the protecting. Even firing a gun in self-defence is deemed worthy of years in jail. Add to that high taxes, and you see a liberal, big-government, socialist bureaucracy. Of course, it probably isn't as bad as all that, but I'm fearful for my homeland. Come on, England, regain your long-castigated motto: "In God we Trust"!

To put my position more clearly: I don't think gun control is a good thing, when it is used excessively. For example, you can have your licensed semiautomatic in the closet to defend your family, but the government shouldn't allow you to have sniper rifles and bombs in abundance. Also, I'd be against letting convicted criminals have access to guns. But in general, gun control doesn't work that much.

Well thats true. I don't think people would buy bombs for self defence...

Why I support gun control--- Let me see- I believe in a three day wait to buy a gun- it cuts down on 'I'm forgot my meds, I am angry, I kill someone' killings. I believe also in a back ground check. I do not want a violent criminal to be able to easily obtain a friction action weapon.

I don't know, if K-Mart started selling guns, business might pick up...
The point of having a gun is to protect yourself from violent criminals who like to kill things.

yeah i agree that gun control would be a useless law, and that instead we should just enforce restrictions on it such as certain guns one is allowed to carry and such
(they don't sell guns at Kmart, but u could always get one at Walmart!)

To be honest, Guns are necessary in a free society because they allow the poeple to secure themselves against an oppressive government, and the other citizens of the area.
