Oh, Hey, look at this! (completely missed this six months ago, so odds are pretty good that nobody's interested anymore, but oh well).
The basic idea behind purgatory is that people in heaven are sinless, whereas nobody lying on there bed is. So simple logic tells us there's gotta be something going on in between.

Unfortunately the word "purgatory" and the actual Biblical basis for an "in between place" is Abrahams bosom which is mentioned in the New Testament with the story of the rich man and Lazarus.
However, note who was telling the story and when it was told, Jesus and pre-resurection. Jesus died for our sins so that we could be made clean. Not only that but that would mean that our sins would be absolved and we could enter Heaven because Jesus paid our price. Furthermore, Abraham's bosom would be emptied with those people going to Hevean.
Also, the Roman Catholic Chruch introduced purgatory as a waiting place where one would "wait" till ones sins are forgiven or some equivalent. This personally makes no sense since time to God is of no concern or problem (if a thousand years pass, it seems like a day to him or like nothing O.O ).
