Like I have said before I would listen to secular rap, but the lyrics and themes are so bad that I don't. For me I listen to music for entertainment. There are times when I listen to worship songs and times I like to sing them, like at church if my church did sing them.

I have noticed that some kinds of secular music, whether its got bad lyrics or not, sometimes can be depressing and dark. I stay away from those types too.

A lot of secular songs deal with love. Some of those songs, naturally, will deal with broken love and will probably be depressing. I don't think they're bad, but I don't especially like them either, Geberia.

I don't think that relationship breakups in songs are depressing, I think the hard rock ones where they talk about everyone dying. I listen to Christian hard rock but that is not depressing.

Well, I've heard secular rap for the first time this last week. Songs include "My Rump" and...uhhh....a bunch of songs I didn't understand. Here's what I say on rap--I love the beat...but the lyrics on 90% are just bad (like in "My Rump").

Exactly. But unfortunately they sell millions of records, while Christian rappers probably don't even get to 100,000 records.
I like the rappers T-Bone and Pettidee because they have the secular beats without the bad lyrics. If you are interested in great Christian rap PM me or ask and I will tell. I have about 15-25 rap CDs.

Really, very few Christian albums ever sell millions of records. If you look on the Top Christian Albums chart on Billboard, the most successful Christian albums are only certified Gold (selling over 500k albums). Virtually none are platinum, while most successful secular artists that are anybody have their albums go Platinum (selling over a million albums).
I guess there's just not that big of an audience for Christian music. It seems to be growing, but it's not quite to the point where a lot of bands/artists achieve national recognition. People would rather listen to the secular stuff.

I've heard Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take The Wheel." It's pretty good and has a good message. They play it on our local Christian radio station. It's not my favorite song, but it's OK.

YES SHE'S FROM OKLAHOMA. DUH. lol
Yeah, people around here had bigger campaigns getting people to vote for her then they do for actual political people---you know, things that matter.
She's ok, I guess...another semi-famous will-be-forgotten-in-five-years-person is from OK.

It is a wonderful song, great message but not "stiff" if you will.

I don't know. I think her Jesus Take the Wheel could become a Christian classic. It is a wonderful song, great message but not "stiff" if you will. I don't know about that. Carrie Underwood is definitely a country artist; "Jesus, Take The Wheel" was her first song to appear on Billboard.com's Hot Christian Songs chart, where it only ever got up to fourth. All her other songs have been standard country. It's a good Christian/Country song that was pretty popular, but I can't say that it'll be a classic.

I am not really a country fan...actually I can't stand it. To me all they sing about is their trucks, girlfriends, and cars...which is a major stereotype.

Isn't that a bit of a generalization? I know lots of bands that don't do that!
I rarely listen to Christian music... I dunno, I'm a huge rock fan, and a stickler for depth and talent, and msot of that you can only find in classic rock anyway (and a few newer bands, a select few). But Christian rock mucis has only been around for a while, and most of the stuff I've heard... just isn't all that great.
I really don't pay that much attention to lyrics most of the time, but I avoid songs that make me uncomfortable. I hate rap and hip-hop with a passion, anyway (and that's the worst of today's music). But it's not so much what the band does as what the songs say... I mean, Eric Clapton was a drug addict, but look at his songs!!!! Led Zeppelin is notorious for getting completely wasted when they made their albums, but none of their songs that I listen to talk about that!
What I'm trying to say is, it's a matter of personal judgement - if you object, don't listen, but don't conform to some kind of standard, cause you could really be missing out!

So, I just found a major argument for not judging a song by the band who sings it!!!! You see, I heard this songs a while ago, called "Vermillion, Pt. 2," and since then I've been searching for it to download it. Turns out it's by... ready for this one? - Slipknot. I hate them and everything they do and stand for, and all the screamo stuff... but I LOVE this song! It's mellow, it's got good lyrics... well, I was surprized, to say the least. (That doesn't mean, however, that I'm going to listen to any other Slipknot stuff. I downloaded Vermillion pt. 1 out of curiosity and it stinks. Sorry, Just needed to ramble about this one!
