Can anyone tell me where is the biblical proof that Jesus descended into Hell after his death? I think I read a verse somewhere that might be construed to be proof of this, but otherwise I find no indication that Jesus descended into Hell.

there are several references:
Act 2:31...." . . . seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in HELL"
Matthew 12:40, Jesus Christ says:
"For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the HEART OF THE EARTH. "
Ephesians 4:9, says of Jesus: "Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the LOWER PARTS OF THE EARTH."
There is also the apostles creed which states:
"I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen."
im also sure there is references in peter to him opening the gates of hell as there was both sinners and saved divided in hell, until jesus' resurrection, which resulted in the saved going to heavens while the rest remained in hell.

See, told you. You're gonna have anyone who says the apostles creed after you...
Actually, in the apostles creed (originally anyway), hell didn't mean the fiery place where Satan and his buddies all hung around. In the old English it was a synonym for Hades, or, in essence, the place of the dead. But not necessarily fiery demons.

Well mabye that's so, but I still believe that in the Bible every time the word hell is mentioned, it is speaking of a literal place.

although old english translation maybe refering to hades instead of hell, but still in several verses "hades" is *NOT* a good place to go:
Matthew 13:42:
"And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
Matthew 25:41:
"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels."
Mark 9:43:
"And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched."
Luke 16:24:
"And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame."
Revelation 20:13-15:
"...hell delivered up the dead which were in them...And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."
Revelation 21:8:
"But the fearful, and unbelieving ... shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone."
*The lowest tempature known to brimstone is 832 Degrees F.
so if you think hell is a nice place to hang around i suggest you think again.

at that point, I don't think you will care who is there. It's who is NOT there that matters.

... true .... but humans tend to be very illogical being like believing that they can exist without a supernatural being (like God). Actually, just talking about Hell, I find it seriously misleading when Hollywood, etc portray Hell as the "domain" of Satan, when in all actuallity, he's going to be a prisoner of it. Just something that bugs me.

I don't think Jesus went down to hell. How can the most righteous person go to hell?

I didn't mean Hell was a nice place. I said in the old English, hell didn't necessarily mean Hell. It meant the place of the dead. There's a difference. Thats why the Nicene Creed has, "and he ascended in heaven," in place of, "he descended into hell."

Well techinquelly(sp?) jesus didnt go to hell, he went to what at that point was heaven(in the old testament heaven and hell were right next to each other under earth until jesus' resurrection in which he took all the good souls to what is know known as heaven).
I dont really think satan and his demon friends are really "prisoners". As they roam about and find un-christian people to do things evil for them and do things that are anti-god and since some people are "Demon Possed"(sp?) know-a-days and in bible times.

Something similar but not quite what I understood. My understanding is that the was a set aside area in Hell known as Abrahams Bosom where the ppl who died before Christ in. This place is pretty much the equivalent of purgatory. A set aside area that is now empty b/c of the resurrection. And yes, I said "going"
