As far as defending yourself if someone breaks into your house with a gun, let's just say I'd be lenient about punishing the guy/girl in self-defense when the case went to court. GDL, where do you get this info from? I didn't remember it being in the Bible or in the footnotes anywhere.

I don't know the customs of the Jewish establishment were at that time, but are you inferring that Jesus would have been in favor of death to the woman if in fact the fellow adulterer had been there? I am not sure about the legal way to stone a person and who had to be there, but the priests of that day didn't seem to intent on keeping the rules at all when it came to trials (i.e.- They didn't give Jesus a fair trial because they had to wait for some amount of time before trying him, and they just went ahead and did it that night.). So, I believe that if the adulterous partner was there is kind of a superficial issue in comparison to Jesus's compassion in that event because the people would have stoned her regardless. If you could explain more of what you mean, I would maybe understand it better, GDL.

yes, it wasn't a fair trial becuase they needed to have the man too. I checked with my dad who knows those kinds of things.
in the old testament if you caught someone breaking into your house you could kill them. I just read that today.

An interesting topic.... I believe that when a man or women (over 18 ) kills someone, that they have forfeighted their own right to live. The government has a responsiblity to get rid of threats to society, that's why we HAVE a government. Jesus, however, was preaching to the individual people. If someone came and robbed my house, I wouldn't pull out my gun and pop him, I'd get him arrested, because it is the government's authority to try and maybe sentence that person. sO just saying that a burglar comes in your house gets a hold of your kid and you just let the police get the guy?

I think the death penalty is good because the victims family gets justice and the murderer gets what he has coming. I am totally against rehabilitation. I think people should go to jail over being rehabilitated. "If you do the crime, you pay the time"

But are we not taught that God is the only one who has a right to judge since he is the only one sinless...i know we've said this all already but anyway lol. Surely a murderer will get just punishment when he dies just like we will be judged justly when w die and anyway Moses was a murderer was he not? Even in the old testament the Lord forgave sins

i'm for the death penalty, because if we all said that it was up to God to judge, and didn't take any action against murderers, by just saying that God will judge them, i mean, where would we be today? there would be no order in society- with that said, there is a part i don't understand about the whole death penalty thing, like in the NT Paul had been killing and persecuting these Jews right? but God forgave him and used him to do great works for him, but shouldn't he have gotten the death penalty? or was that Gods grace?

I just think a death punishment promotes violence...I don't know- we don't have the death penalty here but i don't know if our state of affairs is better or worse.

My stand on the issue:
You take someone's life, and you forfeit the right to live your own. Plain and simple.

I'm for the death penalty. Did you know that on average a person spends a little under 6 years in prison for a life sentence!!!!!!!!! That's not fair or just at all!!!!! Also death gives the government a little bit more leeway when dealing with crimes. Did you know in El Salvador if you are convicted of drunk driving even if it is your first offense you are put in front of the firing squad!!! I bet they don't have near the problems w/drunk drivers that we do here in the states. Also in the first annals of the first continental congress I don't remember exactly who said it or how exactly they said it so I'll kinda paraphrase. they said Sometimes people deserved to be flogged or perhaps have their ears cut off, but instead we just hang them. (unquote) Now I think that they had the right idae no cruel and unussual there but some things just merit death. yes as said before everybody does have rights but when you violate someone elses rights you have given up all rights to even have rights in my eyes. whatever you did the goverment and/or God gets to decide your punishment for it. I know a lot of this cause we just did a debate on capital punishment for my business law class about two weeks ago.

God gives life, and life is priceless, you can't give it back once its gone, how can someone take away Gods special gift and only spend a few years in jai? is their life worth more than the person they murdured?
