Yeah, it's Arab, or more specifically, a Muslim name. Kareem changed his name from Lew Alcindor to, well, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, whenever he converted to Islam while playing NBA basketball.
The only reason that I know that is because Abdul-Jabar is like one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA.
